In December, the weather in Asheville, NC, has lows in the 30s to highs in the 50s. We would definitely recommend wearing layers and bringing a jacket, gloves, and a hat! Asheville doesn’t typically receive a lot of snow in December, but on occasion, it does happen. Asheville’s average annual snowfall is approximately 12 inches.

1. Christmas at Biltmore

Dates: November 1, 2025 – January 4, 2026
America’s Largest Home celebrates every year with a different theme and color scheme for Christmas at the Biltmore, which makes each holiday season unique!

They have miles of lights in their 250 rooms, including decorating the 8,000-acre estate. They have a very large 35-foot tree in the banquet hall, and it takes 40 people to bring the tree into the home. The banquet hall is 70 ft high, which is seven stories high.

This year, they will have at least 67 trees throughout the property. You have two options to view the Biltmore home; the first option is the daytime ticket, where you can see how the home is beautifully decorated with Christmas trees, garlands, and thousands of lights.

In the evening, the second option is a special Candlelight Christmas, where you will find glowing fireplaces, live music, and flickering candlelight. As you approach the Biltmore home, you will be greeted by a 55-foot spruce tree glimmering in the front lawn, surrounded by even more illuminated evergreens.

In the Biltmore Antler Hill Village, the celebration continues. Make sure you stop by the Village for a free tasting of wine at the Winery.

2) Visit the Omni Grove Park Inn
National Gingerbread House Competition

Dates: Stay tuned for 2025
The Omni Grove Park Inn hosts the National Gingerbread House Competition every year, which has been a holiday tradition for over 30 years. Contestants come from all over the country to compete for more than $40K in prizes. They have different categories: adult, teen, youth, and child.

When it comes to the rules for building the gingerbread house, it must be built from a minimum of 75% gingerbread. You will find all shapes, sizes, and themes!

If you are not staying at the resort, you are invited to view the display after 6 p.m. on Sundays or anytime Monday through Thursday. Availability is largely determined by parking availability, and every Friday and Saturday is reserved for hotel guests or those with a confirmed dining reservation.

There is no complimentary parking available. If you would like, you can drive to the main entrance and be assisted by a valet; the fee is $35 for both day and overnight guests. Self-parking is also available for $25 for day guests and overnight guests. During the holiday season, a portion of the parking proceeds supports a local non-profit organization.

If you cannot travel to The Omni Grove Inn this year, they will be continuing the “The 12 Days of Gingerbread.” You can follow them on either Facebook or Instagram, and each day between December 1 and 12, they will narrow down the top 12 finalists.

3) The North Carolina Arboretum

Dates: November 15, 2025 – January 4, 2026

Winter Lights, come experience the arboretum all lit up! This year, they will have over a million lights and new displays combined with old favorites like the 50-foot tree and the Quilt Garden. This year, you can enjoy live music, the Rocky Cove Railroad, a G-scale model train, story time at Woodland Cove, s’mores and fires, stop by the wishing trees, and shop in the gift shops.

Need to warm up while you walk? They will have hot cocoa, beer, and wine available at their Cocoa Shack and Bent Creek Bistro. The Winter Lights is the Arboretum’s largest annual fundraiser, helping to support various aspects of its programming.

Timed Ticketing: Entry times are 6:00 pm, 7:00 pm, or 8:00 pm. You cannot arrive before your entry time.
Flex Tickets: Must be purchased in advance and allow you to change dates if a night is sold out. Entry for flex tickets is 6 pm, and you can arrive anytime between 6 pm and 9 pm on your date.

Admission: Winter Lights tickets are sold per vehicle and size.

4) Jingle Bell Trolley Train Run

Dates: TBD

All aboard the Craggy Mountain Train Line, join them for a 25-minute, 2-mile round-trip ride down the mountain and back in their open-air trolley. All while enjoying cookies, hot chocolate, and the twinkling lights.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be waiting to greet you at the depot area. Each child will receive a gift from them. As you walk into the depot, you will be transported back in time with its 1940s traditional Christmas theme. After the train ride, you can get an opportunity to take a photo with Santa and also look around at all the restored cars that are decorated with lights.

Admission: You can purchase tickets on the day of the event on-site, but we recommend making reservations in advance, as seating is limited.

6) Snow Skiing, Snowboarding, and Tubing

7) Visit Historic Montford

The neighborhood is just a short drive from downtown Asheville. It’s a great way to see beautiful holiday lights in the historic neighborhood.

Park your car and take a walk in the oldest neighborhood in Asheville. There is no cost.

8) Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley Tour

Dates: Mid-November through December, on select days, including Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Time: The trolley departs at 7 p.m.

Hop aboard the Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley for some fun! You will enjoy live music and caroling. The tour is about 75 minutes long and departs from the Olde World Christmas Shoppe at 5 Boston Way in Asheville’s historic Biltmore Village.

Along the way, you will see Christmas lights, but the storytelling and caroling take center stage. Songbooks will be provided during the tour. You will go past downtown Asheville, Biltmore Village, and the Montford and Grove Park neighborhoods.

One nice thing about these trolleys is that they are heated and enclosed with glass windows, so you’ll stay nice and warm on your tour.

9) Visit Frozen Waterfalls near Asheville

Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, you will find numerous waterfalls. Some of the most popular waterfalls near Asheville include Crabtree Falls, Looking Glass Falls, Hooker Falls, Triple Falls, High Falls, Pearson’s Falls, Linville Falls, and so many more! One great way is to take a guided tour.

Sunny Point Cafe is a small cafe that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you ever drive by in the morning during the weekend, you will see a line out the door; get there early when they open at 8:30 a.m.

The parking is very limited near the cafe as well, so plan accordingly. They do have indoor and outdoor tables. They focus on comfort food with fresh ingredients; they even have a garden adjacent to their restaurant.
